Mood & Memory
S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe) is a natural chemical in the body used in part to create various neurotransmitters in the brain and. It has been prescribed in Europe for nearly 30 years and several studies have shown that it can help promote emotional wellness and also improve joint aches. It’s shown to be well tolerated and relatively free of side effects although its cost may limit access and its dose range is not well defined.*
l-Methionine, a precursor to SAMe, has been shown in animal studies to naturally increase SAMe levels and may have potential as a less expensive alternative.
SAMe ultimately gets broken down to homocysteine, an amino acid that has potential risk for heart disease. Betaine (Trimethylglycine or simply TMG) supports converting homocysteine back to l-Methionine and may be considered for individual supplementation or in combination.*
Several studies have correlated deficiencies in Folate (Vitamin B9) with depression and currently there is a prescription folate product named Deplin on the market. Since folate metabolism requires the Methylenetetrahydroflate reductase (MTHFR) enzyme, and deficiencies of this enzyme are somewhat common we offer only supplements with active forms of folate (note that Folic acid is a synthetic form of folate that requires conversion by MTHFR).
Ginkgo biloba has been shown in several studies to help support memory in age-related memory complaints.
